Kristi Chen's multi-disciplinary practice weaves together narratives of migration, intergenerational knowledge, and cultural adaptation. Through her works, she examines the complexities of her ancestral history, connecting it with her own diasporic experience. Raised across diverse regions—Singapore, the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong—her practice reflects the influence of constant movement and the interplay between traditional cultural practices and the modern world.

She draws from familial stories of harvesting and cultivation, incorporating elements of basketry, incense making, and woodworking into her practice. Synthetic materials like rubber and plastic cords are fused with natural woods and vegetation, creating sculptures that reflect the fragility, resilience and adaptive nature of the diasporic experience.

By looking into lost knowledge and integrating contemporary methodologies, Chen's work challenges traditional notions of craftsmanship and materiality while alluding to her forebears, who were farmers, artisans, and survivors.

Patina Patina is a magazine with stories on the arts, identity and culture, questioning the suspension between old and new, by Dan Cui and Maham Momin.

A gathering of thoughts, discussions, and making through the contexts of incense and its histories. Artist Kristi Chen will lead a participatory conversation about ritual, ceremony, ancestry, and her own multi-disciplinary practice, as well as showcase various incense types from cultures around the world.

Participants will also be guided through a hands-on making session to imagine and sculpt a meaningful incense piece for themselves.

Join us for this first PATINAPATINA WorkshoPP, with support from our friends at SHEEEPschool.
