A course to encourage different forms of creative and spatial experimentation.  

GD is a trans-disciplinary approach to spatial exploration, design, and thinking, using urban space as a starting point to ground critical thought and questioning in your creative process. This is the 5th iteration of GD, which has engaged over 160 participants in the past few years.  To see more previous works check out GD on instagram.  

* NOTE: This course has 4 parts; you may register for all parts , or  two parts of your choice,  Part 1 is mandatory for all.

GD - REGISTER FOR INDIVIDUAL PARTS (minimum 2 parts, Part 1 mandatory)

Part 1  // Intro, Theory, Context  (mandatory)August 06, 2024 (6:30-9pm)


Introduction to GUIDED DISTRACTIONS as an experimental methodology with context & history and theory. Conversation about the participants’ topics of interest as it relates to what we will be diving into. 


Part 2 // Collection August 13, 2024 (6:30-9pm)

Brief intro into some theoretical framework followed by urban site visit to act as a testing ground for experiments, collecting data through a variety of tools such as sketching, photography, audio, etc and seeing beyond what’s in front of you. Ending with some tangible outputs from what was collected.  



Part 3 // Poetic PlayAugust 20, 2024 (6:30-9pm)

Brief intro into experimental poetry techniques and sample readings, followed by workshop in list-making, prompt-making to push through some critical thoughts about your topic of choice. The day will end with play with words, and a creative output of what was collected, and what would take you a step forward in your creative process.  



Part 4 // Layered ImaginingAugust 27, 2024 (6:30-9pm)

Brief intro into the politics and processes of collaging (images, sounds, films etc.) Followed by an exercise in creating your own outputs in mixed media from what was collected to provoke new thoughts and critical questioning.

Sharing (exhibition) - optional  August 29, 2024 (6:30-late)

an opportunity for participants to use the BAAA! space to share their work, and engage in critical dialogue and conversation with invited guests.

  • Learn the GUIDED DISTRACTIONS methodology, a non-linear process mixing many mediums, from poetry to collage, to explore critical spatial questions
  • Expand your creative toolbox, and integrate more emergent and experimental thought into your work
  • Work alongside peers in the studio, with guidance from Reza Nik, to create (and potentially exhibit) your experimental piece.


 All parts will take place in-person at BAAA (300 Campbell Avenue, Unit 114).

Reza seeks to disrupt the traditional architectural processes and institutions through his pedagogy, practice & community building. His research examines a deeper dialogue between the socio-political nuances of the urban context and playful experimentation. He is the founding director of @sheeep.studio, a licensed architect, artist and has been an assistant professor in the teaching stream at the University of Toronto’s faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design for the past 7 years.
